it takes my pain away
I went to the Jimmy Eat World concert with my younger brother this week. The concert was absolutely wonderful and I can’t say enough about my love for good live music. However, I think that both of us dervied the most sheer entertainment from laughing at the girl in front of us…
The concert was on a weeknight on a cold December day with a high of about 20 degrees. For most of the world, that means jeans and a sweatshirt. This girl’s clothes reflected none of those compelling facts. I tend to semi-judge people who overdress (i.e. ‘underdress’ for most girls) for situations, but in this case the girl probably shouldn’t have worn what she was wearing in any scenario. That’s a fully-judge moment.
However, all of this would have been forgiveable if she wouldn’t have insisted on acting like an idiot. The concert was at a venue where logically dancing should have been held to head bobbing and foot tapping, maybe a little more on the really good songs. This girl didn’t seem to understand that. In a crowded room, she was jumping in a manner that can only be compared to the way my dog flies around the room when he thinks that you’re about to take him on a walk. There was a bald man of indeterminable age who seemed to be the target of her affection, which meant that she would tackle jump him while having her arms around his neck. I kept waiting for him to haul off and whack her, but apparently bald man had more self control that me.
About 4 songs into the set, this lady came up and talked to the her. At first, I assumed by the similarly unfortunate hair style that it was a friend. I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be a security guard. I’m not sure what exactly she told her. Probably she just asked if the girl had ever been out in public before and told her to be a little bit more socially cognizant. (Also, there were likely some comments made about the theaters intoxication policy…I don’t know if they actually have one of those, but if they did this girl had to be in violation of it.)
Whatever was said, the girl ended up either leaving or moving shortly thereafter and everyone in a 4 person radius breathed a collective thank you. Baldy stayed and enjoyed a couple of songs without being strangled before he left too, probably only out of some sad sense of obligation.
So I realize that writing this blog post makes it sound like I spent the whole time watching her instead of the concert. Which is only partially true. But I find it slightly irrestible to turn down such a golden opportunity to laugh at someone. And also, secretly making fun while also being surrounded by the joy that is Jimmy Eat World and NOT BEING IN THE OFFICE is kind of like a trifecta of amazingness. And who argues with trifectas?

Wow, I encounter people who I want to punch like this all the time working in retail. And I used to love Jimmy Eat World!! I need to reconnect with them, I think. Thanks for reminding me
Me = not opposed to trifectas
